Fashion has always been about more than clothing. At its best, it tells stories, preserves heritage, fuels economies, and creates opportunities for communities to be seen on the world's biggest stages.
For the past sixteen years, Africa Fashion Week London has been doing exactly that.
Returning August 17–23, 2026, this year's event embraces the theme "Design Beyond Borders," bringing together designers, artisans, entrepreneurs, educators, buyers, and creatives from across Africa and the diaspora for a week dedicated to innovation, culture, and commerce.
Since its founding in 2011, Africa Fashion Week London has showcased more than 3,000 designers and creatives, becoming one of Europe's leading platforms for African fashion. But its impact extends far beyond the runway. It has become a place where emerging talent finds visibility, established designers expand into new markets, and conversations about sustainability, technology, entrepreneurship, and cultural preservation take center stage.
This year marks another exciting evolution.
AFWL will make its debut at the iconic 8 Northumberland Avenue while introducing Shop The Runway, a new retail experience that allows guests to connect directly with designers and purchase collections beyond the catwalk. The week will also feature creative industry seminars, networking events, designer development sessions, and a collaboration with the British Council's Creative DNA programme, reinforcing the event's commitment to education and international collaboration.
Behind this remarkable platform is Olori Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, whose vision has transformed Africa Fashion Week London into a global movement.
Born in London to a distinguished Nigerian royal family, Olori Ronke founded AFWL after recognizing the barriers African designers faced in gaining international visibility. Her mission was never simply to produce fashion shows—it was to create opportunity.
That vision has grown far beyond London. Through Africa Fashion Week Nigeria, the Adire Oodua Textile Hub, educational partnerships with leading universities, and initiatives that champion women, artisans, and creative entrepreneurs, she has consistently demonstrated that fashion can be a catalyst for cultural preservation, economic development, and global connection.
In an industry that often looks toward the next trend, Africa Fashion Week London continues to remind us that the future of fashion is rooted in identity, craftsmanship, and community.
At Live Affirmed Magazine, those are conversations we care deeply about.
We're inspired by designers who honor their heritage while pushing creativity forward. We celebrate the entrepreneurs building sustainable businesses, the artisans preserving generations of craftsmanship, and the visionaries proving that African fashion is not simply participating in the global industry—it is helping define where it goes next.
As Africa Fashion Week London celebrates sixteen years of impact, one thing is certain: African fashion isn't waiting for a seat at the table. It is building new tables, opening new doors, and inviting the world into the conversation.
And that's a story worth telling.
