Afrik Abaya’s MATA doesn’t try to compete for attention—it holds it. Presented at Modest Fashion Week, the collection centers on growth, identity, and the kind of presence that doesn’t need to be announced to be felt.

Behind the brand is Hauwa Liman, the founder and creative director of Afrik Abaya, a Nigerian entrepreneur based in Abuja, Nigeria. She launched the brand to merge African aesthetics with modest fashion, resulting in a globally recognized Afrocentric abaya brand—one that carries both cultural depth and contemporary relevance onto the international stage.

“Showcasing at Modest Fashion Week wasn't just about presenting a new collection; it was about making a global statement,” Liman shares. For Afrik Abaya, the moment stood as “a powerful bridge between our rich, vibrant African heritage and the mainstream modest fashion narrative,” a deliberate positioning of Afrocentric modest fashion within a global conversation that has too often overlooked it.

At the heart of the collection is MATA—“Her Bloom Through Her Season.” Rooted in the Hausa word for “women”—a language spoken widely across West Africa—the collection moves as a reflection of internal transformation. “The central inspiration behind this collection is the profound, internal journey of a woman… her quiet, undeniable evolution blooming through the different seasons of her life.” It’s not trying to prove anything. It doesn’t need to. “This collection is an ode to the woman who wants to be seen without being loud; her presence speaks for itself.”

That same balance—between presence and ease, culture and modernity—defines the brand’s aesthetic language.
